MATTEO DELLA BORDELLA

I’m 40 years old and I was born and raised in Varese, Italy. I started climbing when I was 12, exploring the nearby cliffs and classic Alpine routes with my dad. At first, mountaineering didn’t fully grab me, but over time it turned into my greatest passion.

In 2008 I graduated in Management Engineering from LIUC University in Castellanza and completed a PhD by 2012. However, I never distanced myself from the mountains, and eventually decided to fully dedicate my life to alpinism, constantly pushing my limits.

Since 2006 I’ve been part of the Ragni di Lecco (Lecco’s Spiders), a group that helped me grow as both a mountaineer and a person. A few years later, I also joined the Italian Academic Alpine Club (CAAI). These experiences allowed me to travel the world, looking for new climbs on remote and often unclimbed walls.

I’m passionate about “by fair means” alpinism — climbing with minimal technology and external support, challenging the mountain on equal terms and respecting nature as much as possible. I love big, vertical rock walls, especially when the goal is to free climb them with minimal gear, embracing technical difficulty and physical challenge.

I truly believe in the strength of teamwork and friendship to achieve goals that, at first, might seem impossible. Adventure is key for me — often, the biggest challenge during an expedition is just reaching the base of the wall and coming back safely.

I’ve been to Patagonia 15 times, a place I deeply love, but I’ve also climbed in Greenland, Pakistan, India, and Baffin Island.

Some of my proudest accomplishments include:

  • The new route “Brothers in Arms” on Cerro Torre, Patagonia (2022)
  • The “Odyssea Borealis” expedition in Greenland (2024), including 450 km by kayak and a first ascent of an unclimbed peak
  • “Gringos Locos” on Cerro Piergiorgio (2025), the final chapter of the CAI Eagle Team educational project
  • The first ascent of the west face of Bhagirathi 4, Himalaya — a 6200 m big wall previously attempted by many other alpinists
